Getting Personal Health Insurance in Wisconsin

Do I need to get it?

If you aren’t insured through your employer or through another group (Medicare, Medicaid, etc.), you may be required to get private – also known as personal – health insurance in Wisconsin or pay a fee.

In some cases, you might want to buy personal health insurance even if your employer offers coverage. If your employer’s plan isn’t affordable or doesn’t meet the minimum value standard, you may be eligible for a premium tax credit to help pay for your personal health plan.1

Do I need to buy personal health insurance through the government Health Insurance Marketplace website?

No, you may work directly with a health insurance company. For example, Unity offers a full range of plans that are sold on the Health Insurance Marketplace (Exchange), but you may also buy them directly. The advantage of this is that you can have prompt, knowledgeable and friendly Unity customer service representatives help answer your questions about personal health insurance. If you buy an individual plan directly from a health insurer, you may not be able to receive any help from the federal government with your costs based on your income, unless your insurer supports direct enrollment with the Marketplace. Unity offers direct enrollment, which allows you to shop Marketplace plans through our website. This help is only available if you buy your health plan through the Health Insurance Marketplace (Exchange) and you make between 100 percent and 400 percent of the Federal Poverty Level.2

What if I think I might be eligible for subsidies?

To get subsidies, you have to purchase your plan through the Health Insurance Marketplace. You can see if you may qualify and apply for Marketplace plans using Unity’s Get a Quote tool. Unity customer service representatives are available to help you with this process through Live Chat or over the phone. It can be helpful to get information about the process and know what you’re looking for in a plan before you go online. They’ll help you review the plans that might make sense for your personal needs.
