Employers: Seasonal Flu Vaccine Shortage Update

Unity Health Insurance is aware of the national seasonal flu vaccine shortage.  Manufacturers of the seasonal vaccine halted production to begin production of the H1N1 vaccine to ensure distribution of both vaccines to the public in a timely manner.  Due to these circumstances Unity’s flu vaccine vendors, UW Home Health (UWHH) and Home Health United (HHU) received a fraction of the ordered supply, resulting in the rescheduling of many worksite flu clinics.

Both Unity vendors are assured they will receive their entire order by late November or early December and plan to reschedule the worksite flu clinics accordingly.  This timing will still offer protection against the seasonal flu.

In past years, administration of flu shots began in October and November and continued through December.  Typically, seasonal flu activity does not peak until mid-winter or even later.

We understand this situation may be inconvenient for those wishing to receive their flu vaccine in October.  Members can also check with their primary care practitioner (PCP) clinic or the Pharmacy Network list on the status of flu vaccine at these sites.  HR personnel at worksites should continue to communicate importance of proper hygiene  for the prevention of the spread of upper respiratory illnesses and the flu.

We will continue to monitor and inform our employer groups of any developments concerning the flu vaccine status.
